Taking your dog for a car ride is fine, but there is a point when it evolves from being a fun trip to a dangerous situation.

All I have to say is "who wants to go bye bye in the car" and all hell breaks loose.  Honestly there are not too many dogs that don't want to do a road trip with mom or dad but THAT should be it!  A road trip - not "let's go grocery shopping and you sit in the car while mommy's in the store for an hour".  You are not doing your pets any favors by taking them. Some people don't realize even if it's a breezy 70 degree day out that inside the cars with the windows cracked the temperature can shoot up to 110 degrees in 30 minutes!

This happened to me today: I was in a parking lot and I heard a whiney sound.  I turned around and there was a dog in a car, so I did what you are supposed to do: stay with the car and call the cops.  15 minutes had passed and I saw the dog was NOT in distress so I wasn't too worried.  Also I found out today through a friend in Law Enforcement that if I was to take it into my own hands and try to save him I would be the one who would be arrested.  The law in New Jersey is that a dog is considered a "piece of property" and you can NOT take or even RESCUE a dog in trouble without ramifications, so if you do come across a situation like this the proper way to take care if it is to first notify the proper authorities.  If there is anyone else around, ask them to go into the store and page the owner of whatever car it is and just wait.  All you can do is wait and only if they see the dog is in fact actually in distress they can be charged with animal cruelty.

It's time that there needs to be a law on the books about this.  I also think that parking lots and doors of stores should have signs that state: DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR!!!

What Do You Think?

Am I overreacting or is this law ridiculous?
