What’s Worth Losing Sleep Over?

Do you value a good night’s sleep?  I know I do – but every now and then something becomes greater than one night of rest…

There are many unique responsibilities I have as a member of Bob & Marianne in the Morning.  One of the most basic of those is the responsibility to be on time, each and every morning.  That means having the alarm set for 4:17AM, warming up the car at 4:45AM, leaving my driveway at 4:53AM and walking into the studio at approximately 5:15AM to get ready for my morning.  As you might imagine, routine is a very important aspect in the life of a morning show worker.  However, before any of these scheduled habits begin, it’s imperative that there is a good night of sleep the night before.

Sunday’s are generally the hardest night to fall into slumber.  I spend the whole week following a rigid routine that involves me getting into bed at the 9 o’clock hour, but then the weekend comes in like a hurricane and shreds that routine to bits.  This usually leaves me watching TV on a Sunday night knowing I should be getting to sleep, but not being tired enough to do so.  Most of the time I am able to fight this off within an hour and get the nightly rest needed for a long and productive Monday to follow.  There is almost nothing on TV that is worth losing sleep over.

But then again there are those nights – those MUST WATCH nights – that will keep me up well past my targeted mark.  New York Giants games often fit this criteria.  Giants vs. Cowboys games almost always fit the bill.  Giants vs. Cowboys for first place in the NFC East ALWAYS come before sleep.

Such was the case last night when the Giants of New York took the field against the Cowboys of Dallas.  It was a fantastic game through and through – but there was a point – at about the 11:30PM mark – that pushed me to my limits.  The Cowboys had just scored and took a 2 touchdown lead over Big Blue with only minutes remaining in the game.  I thought to myself “this is NOT worth a good night’s sleep, why do I torture myself like this!?”  I told myself that this was the last play – no more!  But as I was getting up, the Giants began moving the ball and I sat back down for some reason…

Two touchdowns and an incredible blocked field goal for the win later, I was jumping up and down like I just saw Santa come down my chimney.  What an unbelievable finish to an astonishing game.  I could have easily seen highlights from the game the next morning, watched it on replay the next afternoon and listened to endless discussion on the radio all day – but NOTHING would have compared to the feeling of seeing the dramatic finish unfold live.  I woke up like I do every Monday at 4:17AM – and felt GREAT after such an eventful contest the night before.

My point is – some things ARE worth losing sleep over.  If the Giants had lost I might be singing a completely different tune, but you have to take risks to feel that type of rewarding feeling.  Now I am able to relive this rare kind of moment again and again in talking with friends and co-workers who felt the same emotions I did.  It’s unlikely I could have as meaningful a conversation with some one about how great a night of sleep we had gotten the night before.

Sleep is a valuable asset – but what is worth losing sleep over for you?
