Ride along with Howell Police Officer Robert Hill when every second counts, as he responds to a raging house fire in time to pull two people and their dog from the flames.

Howell police posted the dash cam video of the December 22 incident on their Facebook page. One of the inhabitants told authorities that he was letting a car idle in the garage after jump-starting it, and it caught fire.

Hill was patrolling Route 33, about two miles away from the house on Five Points Road, when he was alerted. He arrived in two mintues' time, to see the garage enveloped in flames and bystanders shouting for the occupants to escape, police said.

Leaving enough room for firefighters to move in, the 20-year veteran rushed inside and brought the 62-year-old home owner, her 27-year-old son, and their dog, from the house to his squad car.

Police said the woman was treated for smoke inhalation. Adelphia Fire Company responders knocked back the flames enough to salvage the house, limiting the damage to the garage and two vehicles inside, authorities said.

Inspectors approved the house for temporary habitation. The Howell Fire Bureau is investigating the incident.

Howell Police and Fire officials issue a reminder that letting a vehicle run, unattended, near a structure of any kind, presents the potential for perils and tragedies.
