We have a warning for you as an old scam is making new rounds in South Jersey lately.

A number of people with 732 and 609 area codes have told us that they have received automated calls claiming to be from your credit or debit card company, telling you that there is a problem.

Some calls say "your credit card" some have apparently identified Barclays Bank as the company. Either way, they're all scams.

They tell you that your card has been locked and that you must punch in your credit or debit card number to reactivate your account. Of course, this is how the scammers get your credit or debit card number, and the problems begin.

If you ever receive a call like this, there are a few things that you should do:

    • Make note of the incoming phone number.

    • Do not enter any of your information or give it to anyone claiming to be a customer service representative.

    • If you do end up speaking to someone, tell them that you will call your card company's customer service number and hang up. Do not give out any of your information.

    • Immediately call the number on the back of your credit card to alert them and make sure that your account has not been compromised.

Remember, your credit or debit card company will never call you and ask you to give out your account number. If you receive a call of any kind asking you to enter or give your personal or account information, you should immediately be suspicious and hang up!

As scammers get more sophisticated, their methods look and sound more legitimate. Have you received a call like this recently? Tell us in the comments.
