While the Toms River Little League All-Stars head to Bristol, Connecticut later this week for the Mid-Atlantic Regional the Waretown Thunder have arrived in Pittsfield, Massachusetts for the Babe Ruth 16 & Under Softball World Series.

Waretown Thunder (Waretown Thunder)

The dozen girls coached by Darren Mooney rolled through the Southern New Jersey and Middle Atlantic Regional Tournaments and open pool play today against a team from Manchester, New Hampshire.  The top pitcher for the Thunder is 14-year old Cheyanne Nastasi who won three games in the regionals.

Their top offensive players include Cristy Peterson, Gabriella D’Amodio and Francesca Aimone.

I have been telling people all along that I think Mike Gesicki will get a chance to play right away as a freshman at Penn State.  Just five weeks after graduating from Southern Regional, Gesicki has already drawn the attention of one of the Nittany Lions top players.  Senior linebacker Mike Hull was asked this week during Big Ten Media Day in Chicago who was the one freshman who stood out during summer workouts and he said “Mike Gesicki is the guy who jumps out to me right away.”  Hull added that the 6’6 tight end has made quite an impression and might have the best ball skills of anyone he has seen.

Gesicki and fellow true freshman Saed Blacknall of Manalapan could both see action when Penn State visits Rutgers on September 13th in what will be the Scarlet Knights Big Ten debut.

During last night’s game the Dodgers announced that legendary baseball broadcaster Vin Scully would return for an unprecedented 66th consecutive season behind the microphone in 2015.  ESPN Sports Business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted that the last time the 86-year old Scully was not the voice of the Dodgers the average cost of a house in the U.S. was $1,911.  That was in 1949.

The season is winding down in the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Summer Basketball League with Horn Law Group and T&T Coast winning playoff games Tuesday to advance to tonight’s semifinals at Wall High School.  Horn Law Group will face Larson Ford in the opening semifinal at 7:15 followed by T&T Coast matching up with Sterns Trailer.  The winners battle for the championship on Thursday.
