Wall Township woman left month-old alone in running car, says Sheriff

A Wall Township woman accused of leaving her month-old infant alone in a running, unlocked car Wednesday faces a child endangerment charge, and sparks a general warning from Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.

According to information from Golden's office, Heather Drum, 29, was apprehended while paying court fines at the County Probation Office in Ocean Township. Officers said that she left her car in a fire zone, and was directed to move it elsewhere.

When she re-entered the building, Sheriff's officers watching security monitors noticed her car windows rolled down, and the baby girl inside in a safety seat, authorities said, estimating that the infant was alone for four to five minutes.

Drum was also cited for leaving a running vehicle unattended, and released. Golden discouraged the alleged behavior in no uncertain terms.

"This type of act is dangerous and irresponsible and could cause serious harm, or death, to a child," the Sheriff said. "A child should never be left unattended in a car. I commend the sheriff officers for their quick thinking which helped ensure the child's safety."

Sergeant Craig Ralston and Sheriff's Officers Tina Valle, Randy Rodriguez and Ben Rivera Estrada were involved in the arrest.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
