One person is dead and another injured following a major collision at the Point Pleasant Grand Prix event on Sunday.

Investigators with the Ocean County Prosecutors Office say the 26' Magnum boat "Repeat Offender" operated by James Byrne, 38, of Nutley (driver) and David Raabe of Forked River (throttle) crossed in front of the 2012 26' Joker boat "Smith Brothers" operated by Peter Smith, 53, of Riverton, NJ (driver) and his brother Richard of Souderton, PA and collided around 12:55 pm.

Raabe suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:22 pm according to authorities.

The crash occurred during the first lap of a seven lap, 4.5-mile course on the water while the "Smith Brothers" were trying to make a turn at the second of three buoys.

The "Smith Brothers" boat sunk into the waters below after forcibly ejecting both of them but not after it hit the "Repeat Offender" occupants.

All four riders were wearing helmets during the race and Byrne remains in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The investigation into the crash and why "Repeat Offender" made a turn in front of "Smith Brothers" is unknown at this time.

Point Pleasant Beach Police were also on scene.

The Ocean County Sheriff Department CSI responded to the U.S. Coast Guard Station to photograph the vessel and document damage associated with the accident.
