United flight takeoff at Newark aborted over brake issue
NEWARK — A United Airlines flight to Hawaii was evacuated just before takeoff on Sunday morning.
FAA spokeswoman Pamela Bergen in a statement said United flight 61 bound for Honolulu aborted its takeoff from Runway 4 just before 9 a.m.
The pilot said the Boeing 767 taxied off the runway and onto a holding and reported that the aircraft had "hot brakes" due to the quick stop, according to Bergen.
Spokesman Scott Ladd from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey said the passengers were taken off the plane on the runway and transported by bus back to Terminal C.
"We are providing meal vouchers, snacks and beverages as we work as quickly as possible to get customers to Honolulu," United spokeswoman Maddie King said.
According to the website FlightAware.com the new flight will leave Newark at 2:10 p.m.
An Aircraft Rescue and Firefighter sprayed water on the brakes before the plane was towed back to a hanger.
Ladd said no one was injured in the incident.
