BELMAR — Two girls were pulled out of the water Thursday night.

One of the girls died while the other remained on life support, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Earlier in the evening, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty told New Jersey 101.5 the girls were reported missing around 6:20 p.m at the beach between 11th and 9th Avenues.  There were no lifeguards on duty at the time, according to Doherty.

The two girls, who are both from Belmar,  were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The National Weather Service said there was a moderate risk of rip currents on Thursday along the entire Jersey Shore.

Belmar Police were assisted by  the Coast Guard, the State Police Marine Services Bureau and Aviation Unit, Belmar Water Rescue and the Monmouth County Dive Team.
