For the last 87 years, it's been of vital importance to the residents in the region.  Fast forward to today, the high tech and ultra modern facilities have been expanded and are now garnering top marks on a national list.

The library, which has 19 branches and 2 reading centers, was recently recognized in the 2013 Gale/Library Journal as number three in the country on the best of the best list.  The Howard County Library System in Maryland was named library of the year.  The Sacramento Public Library in California was number two.

Director Susan Quinn says "our branches received special mention for our dedication to the community.  This award isn't just for one person or the library itself.  It goes to the public who makes the library a special place to be.  It is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, to learn, to be entertained, etc.  There is so much to gain."

The library also got high marks for community dedication in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.  In the over eight months since the storm, the many branches have been instrumental in lending a hand or a place for those in need.  This was apparent in the days and weeks following the October 29th storm.
