Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said the 33-year-old woman was babysitting her nephew and didn't realize he followed her outside when she went to move her vehicle to a closer parking space in the Woodlake Manor Complex to load packages.

"Unbeknownst to her, the child had followed her out and was unfortunately behind the car and not visible to her," Staffordsmith said in a press release.

The frantic woman called 9-1-1, but a neighbor drove them to Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township before police responded, according to Staffordsmith.

"Unfortunately, the young boy succumbed to his injuries a short time later," said Staffordsmith.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation by the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, the Detective Bureau and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.

Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise donations for the child's burial expenses and other emergency costs that the family is now facing, according to The Lakewood Scoop. More than $3,000 had been raised by 9:30 a.m. Friday.
