Todd Frazier’s Busy Off Season

A busy off-season is about to become even busier for Toms River’s Todd Frazier, who had a banner rookie season for the Cincinnati Reds.

Frazier was chosen by fellow players as the top rookie in the National League and finished 3rd in voting by the baseball writer’s for the Rookie of the Year award.  Now that he’s established himself as a major leaguer Frazier is building a house in Toms River which hopefully will be completed in the next 2-3 weeks.

The timing is crucial because he is getting married in mid-December to Jackie Verdon, a gymnast he met while both were at Rutgers.

Todd paid a visit to WOBM on Monday as we helped him record a promo to run for an event in Cincinnati.  Right now he figures to be the starting third baseman unless the Reds re-sign Scott Rolen, who is a free agent.

Todd and his older brothers Jeff and Charlie will receive quite a tribute this Saturday when the Toms River East Little League renames its all-weather practice facility “Frazier Fieldhouse.”  During the 10am ceremony at the Windsor Avenue complex league officials will also name Field #4 as “Frazier Field.”  The Fraziers and Toms River East Little League were synonymous with success in the 90’s as three All-Star teams made it to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series and the 1998 squad led by Todd won it all.

Very often highly-recruited high school athletes play their senior seasons with the pressure of having to make a college choice but that will not be the case for Point Pleasant Borough girls Babketball standout Kelly Hughes.

The 5’11 guard honored a previous verbal commitment by signing a National Letter of Intent with Boston College last week.  Hughes led the shore in scoring last season, averaging over 23 points per game and selected BC over schools like Rutgers, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Harvard.  She will be one of the featured players in next month’s 29th annual WOBM Christmas Classic at the Pine Belt Arena.

The Ocean County Vocational-Technical School will hold an admission information session for the 2013 school year at their Performing Arts Academy tomorrow night at 7pm.  The session was added due to recent school closings and middle school students considering a future in the performing arts and their parents are encouraged to attend.  Pre-registration is required by calling (732) 286-5678.
