EDISON — It was a scary ride on the New Jersey Turnpike Friday night when a woman was injured after her car was hit by a tire that flew off an SUV on the opposite side of the road.

The tire came off a Ford Explorer traveling north near Exit 10 and hit the windshield of a Hyundai Accent on the southbound inner lanes just before 9 p.m., according to State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez.

Gladys Duman, 29, of Elmhurst, New York, was seriously injured and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The driver of the car, Defo Saco, 40, of Elmhurst, and two children in the back seat were not injured.

Video of the car shows a partially cracked windshield and a deep dent in the roof of the car.

Goez said it was not known what caused the tire to come off the Explorer and the investigation into the incident continues.

No one riding in the Explorer was hurt in the incident.
