NEWARK — City police busted six alleged prostitutes on Sunday in an operation officials said began as an alert from the public.

All but one of the suspects are city residents.

Police said the arrests followed quality-of-life complaints on Mulberry Street, Scott Street, Orchard Street and Camp Street near Lincoln Park.

While those arrested have male names and are listed in criminal complaints as male, police officials say the six identify as women.

Remones McDaniels, 29; Dorell Korngay, 19; DeShawn Washington, 26; and Zyquan R. Twitty, 20, were charged with prostitution and soliciting prostitution as well as contempt of court as a result of being wanted for prior offenses.

Yusef Hudson, 26, of Newark, and Derrick Benson, 25, of Hamburg, also are facing prostitution charges.

“These arrests are due to the public’s involvement in alerting us to criminal activity occurring in their neighborhoods,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a prepared statement. “Our partnership with our citizens is one of our greatest assets. We will continue to respond to and answer citizen complaints while enforcing the law.”
