I watch the news every day and the videos and pictures of what is going on in this country regarding immigration is shocking and disturbing.  Reports are that some 1,500 migrants arrive every day in El Paso, Texas with the overwhelming majority now coming from Venezuela.  Most of them have to spend a day or two under a bridge across the Rio Grande River to be processed and many don’t find a place to stay because the city has been overwhelmed and has run out of shelter space.

We who live here have seen countless stories of these migrants arriving in New York City on buses sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in what is a game of political football.  Reports say that when asked where they want to go some 20% of all migrants pick New York which clearly is the city of choice.

However we have gotten to the point where the Big Apple is being overwhelmed and this week announced they will build what in essence is a “tent city” in the Orchard Beach parking lot now that summer is over.  City leaders are actually calling this and a second one being planned “humanitarian emergency response and relief centers” which will provide shelter, food, medical care, legal aide and more.  The first center will be strictly for single adults as families are required to be kept together.

I don’t have the answer but our so-called leaders need to act now on the border insanity that is placing a burden on this country which we can’t handle.  New York has already received more than 10,000 asylum seekers who are now living in homeless shelters.

A famous quote from a poem in bronze inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty:

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teaming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

They might want to add, “Please only come if you have family to live with.”
