The Myths of Home Improvement

It’s pretty much assumed that as the man of the house you should have the ability to at the very least take care of most simple home repairs.

(Dan Alexander,Townsquare Media NJ)

Of course many can do far more than that and take on major home improvement projects which will save them a significant amount of money.

Then you have the category that I fall in which my wife reminds me of with some regularity.  There are those with two left feet and those with two left hands. I’m okay on my feet but real bad with the hands.  In the current issue of Men’s Health I came across some interesting numbers when it comes to men and home improvement:

  • 75% of women think every guy should own a power drill. I do not.
  • 1 in 5 men insist a “nail gun” is atop their tool wish list. Not I.
  • 19% can’t seem to find the right tool when it’s needed. I would be in that category.
  • 1 in 4 men say their wife has been on their back about trying a home repair. I clearly am among that group.
  • 78% of women think their guy should at least be able to fix a leaky faucet. I can’t.
  • 15% of men admit to being scared off when they see “assembly required.”  You know I’m in that group.
  • 90% say they could change a light fixture, 75% could insulate their attic, 61% could install crown molding, 58% can hang kitchen cabinets, and 40% could lay carpet.  Are you kidding?
  • The average guy lusts after a Table Saw. Come on.
  • 12% of men are determined to repaint the inside of their home.  At least I’m in the majority.
  • 2 in 3 men have a workbench…you know where I stand on this one.
  • 62% of women are turned off by guys who are not has handy as they are…no comment.
  • There is some good news for me.  6% of men could not identify an Allen wrench and I can!
  • By the way 11% of men have been seriously injured during a home repair project.  That’s why I stay away because that number would clearly increase.
