The James Volpe Foundation

Sometimes good does come out of bad and in the case of the James Volpe Foundation, the tragic death of a teen-age student-athlete has been turned into a positive that has helped many individuals and organizations.

James was a senior baseball player at Jackson Memorial High School who was killed while riding in a car in May of 2011, just a month before he would have graduated. Shortly after his death family and friends started a foundation in his name and in less than two years the charity has made an impact in the lives of others while raising and donating over $35,000

On Monday, June 17th the foundation will hold its 2nd annual Golf Classic at Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson, one of two major fundraisers they hold.  Last year’s inaugural event was used to fund four college scholarships, supply holiday gifts and food to families in need, establish a SADD chapter at Jackson Memorial High School, assist families struggling from Superstorm Sandy and much more.

Organizers once again have a great day of golf planned followed by a buffet dinner and an auction with items ranging from Broadway show tickets and overnight stays to sports collectables. Proceeds from the outing will be used to provide college scholarships and other educational assistance while also supporting bereaving families during their time of need.

For information on playing or sponsoring the event or just supporting the foundation visit or call Rob Meleo at (609) 247-0577.

While he is missed greatly by his family and friends they take comfort in knowing that James Volpe’s spirit lives on through this wonderful foundation.

Brick Memorial High School will hold its first Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet next Thursday, June 6 at The Crystal Point in Point Pleasant.  Because the school opened in 1980 the first Hall of Fame class will honor those who contributed greatly to the Mustangs athletic success in the first decade.  The inaugural inductees are headed up by the school’s first athletic director George Rao along with legendary wrestling Coach Tony Caravella and soccer coaching great Woody French.

The honored athletes making up the first class are Craig Liberatore, Bob Martin, Pete Ramsey, Eileen Reilly and Mary Voorhees.  The school will also pay tribute to the 1983 Boys Soccer team, the 1986 Wrestling team and the 1986 Cheerleading squad.

Not to be forgotten are five couples and individuals whose support as boosters helped define Mustang pride, including Tony & Gail Albanese.    Tickets for the ceremony and dinner are $50 each and available by calling Peg at (732) 785-3000, ext. 3044
