It was four months ago that I first mentioned Trevor Kwatkoski in advance of a high school basketball doubleheader that would serve as a fundraiser for the 5-year old Berkeley Township boy who was battling bone cancer. On that January evening the boys and girls teams from Central Regional and Toms River South helped raise over $4400 to help Trevor’s family with the staggering expenses surrounding his treatment. Just as important was the fact the community came together to show their support for Tom and Jill’s youngest child including members of local police and fire departments and baseball All-Star Todd Frazier.

The Kwatkoski’s are a tight-knit family and at times seemed overwhelmed that so many would want to help Trevor who has battled through numerous rounds of chemotherapy. Those who know them say it’s not surprising that in the true spirit of “pay it forward” they have launched their own campaign to help others. Before I get to that let me give you an update on Trevor who is doing very well. Previously he had surgery to remove the fibula bone from his left leg so he goes for physical therapy a few times a week. Most importantly his scans have been stable and he’s playing tee ball in the Berkeley Little League while going to pre-K at the Bayville School…next year he’ll be in Kindergarten.

The family is grateful to many including the staff at Robert Wood Johnson’s Children’s Hospital where Trevor has spent a considerable amount of time. At Christmas time the hospital receives many donations of toys but by the time we get to summer they are pretty much gone. The gifts are used year-round for children who are sick or facing surgery so the Kwatkoski’s are launching a Christmas in July Toy Drive with donations going into a Treasure Box for all ages…infants to teenagers. They are seeking everything from puzzles, coloring books, dolls, board games, trucks and cars…you name it. There are more than a dozen locations from Bayville to Brick where they can be dropped off and a complete list is available by checking out my Hometown View blog on wobm.com (wobmam.com).

Tom and Jill said when Trevor was hospitalized those gifts brought a smile to his face and meant so much…they want to be able to do the same for others. Please support the Team Trevor Toy Drive and make a difference!
