Spotswood High Couple Will Be Laid to Rest Together
The Spotswood High School couple that died together in a car crash Saturday night will be laid to rest together.
Jeffrey A. Szatkowski, Jr will be laid to rest with the "love of his life," Nicole Surace, at the Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick on Thursday following separate funerals.
Friends last night held a vigil in the parking lot of the Spotswood Municipal Building according to the Star-Ledger, capping a day of mourning at Spotswood High School, where Szatkowski was a senior, and at Monmouth University where Surace was in her first semester as a freshman marketing major.
Their sudden death has deeply affected the communities that make up the Spotswood High School district. At a makeshift memorial at the crash site on Dutch Road,East Brunswick Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety William Krause sadly read a tweet Surace made on Thanksgiving Day according to MyCentralJersey.com
Grieving In Small Groups
Small groups of students are being allowed to "safely" gather at the crash site alongside the narrow road which connects Millville and Spotswood.
Spotswood High School was closed to the media to allow for privacy and counseling. Monmouth University President Paul R. Brown called Surace's death "truly tragic" reports the Patch of West Long Branch.
According to her obituary, Surace was a member of the Monmouth Community Service Club and helped serve Thanksgiving dinner at a shelter. Szatkowski "proudly" wore #7 for the Spotswood Chargers football team and was selected to the Heroes and Cool Kids program, an anti-bullying program at Spotswood High School.
A wake for Surace will be held at the Bronson & Guthlein Funeral Home of Milltown on Wednesday from 2 p.m - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. Her funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church in East Brunswick.
Szatkowski's wake is at the Brunswick Memorial Home in East Brunswick from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Wednesday; the funeral is also at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Donations in Surace's name may be made the the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Szatkowski's family is accepting doantions to the Jeffrey A. Szatkowski, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, 14 Lakeview Drive, Spotswood, NJ 08884.
