Speed Checks At Hudson River Crossing Toll Booths [POLL]

You had better watch your speed as you go through toll booths at every Hudson River crossing.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is clocking drivers and your EZ-Pass account will be suspended if you’re nabbed speeding through a booth more than once.

PANYNJ spokesman Steve Coleman says, “If you’re found speeding through an EZ-Pass lane, on the first offense you’ll be given a warning letter. On a second offense you’ll be given a 60 day suspension. On a third offense you’ll be given a 180 day suspension and on fourth and subsequent offenses you’ll be given a year suspension.”

Coleman says this is not “Big Brother” in action. There are no speeding tickets issued. There are no fines and drivers do not get points on their licenses.

“These are suspensions of your EZ-Pass privileges,” explains Coleman. “There not suspensions of your drivers’ licenses. This is not a police action……This is strictly to ensure that people who have EZ-Pass are driving safely through the toll plazas and that toll collectors and other operations and contract staff are safe.”

Coleman says, “Suspensions will not go into effect until 14 days after the suspension notice has been mailed. Drivers should not be shocked that their EZ-Pass privileges are suspended.”

If your EZ-Pass privileges are suspended that means your EZ-Pass won’t work on any toll road including the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway. Those toll roads do not have speed checks at toll booths and Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney says there is no mechanism in place to be able to gauge speed by timing how quickly a driver gets from one toll booth to another. He reminds motorists that law enforcement is constantly checking speeds the old fashioned way.
