Shutdown sit-down: Christie invites top Democrats to meet
TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie has invited top Democrats to his office for a meeting on the budget impasse, with just hours before a possible state government shutdown.
Tomorrow is the start of the new fiscal year, and the Legislature has been unable to pass a budget — largely because of conflict over Christie's demand for legislation that would affect the finances, governance and transparency of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, the state's largest health insurer.
"The governor has invited the Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Speaker of the Assembly Vincent Prieto, Senator Loretta Weinberg, Senator Paul Sarlo, and Assemblyman Gary Schaer for a meeting at his office at 2 p.m.," Christie spokesman Brian Murray said in a statement. "He hopes all will attend.”
