Woman, elderly man both die when SUV hits Jersey Shore restaurant

EAGLESWOOD — Two people, including a 91-year-old man, were killed when their SUV hit a Jersey Shore restaurant on Wednesday.

State  Police spokesman Lt. Ted Schaefer the 2009 GMC SUV was heading northbound on Route 9 in Eagleswood when it veered across the two lane highway, hit the sidewalk, a guide wire and a lamp post before hitting the side of Calloway’s restaurant, on the southbound just after 3 p.m. 6ABC video of the crash scene showed that the SUV did not go through the wall.

A 91-year-old man, Albert Rulon of Tuckerton and the driver, 54-year-old woman,Patty Rulon, from Manahawkin were killed in the crash. A 15-year-old boy, Charles Rulon, was severely injured in the crash.

A 44-year-old Tuckerton woman, whose identity was not disclosed,  was also sitting in the back seat was partially ejected through the windshield and was hospitalized for shoulder and head injuries, according to Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Al Della Fave.

Della Fave said Patty Rulon lost consciousness and fell onto the steering wheel while her foot was still on the accelerator

Three medical helicopters were brought to the scene, according to Schaefer.

Della Fave said Albert Rulon died en route to Atlanticare Medical Center while Patty Rulon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV was the only vehicle involved.  No one was injured inside Calloway’s, according to Schaefer,

Della Fave nor Schefer did not know the relationship between the passengers in the car.

Route 9 was closed in both directions for much of the afternoon commute for cleanup and investigation causing big traffic delays.

Many area fire and rescue crews responded to the crash including the Eagleswood, Parkertown and Stafford Fire Departments and Quality, Great Bay & Tuckerton EMS . MONOC was the ALS. Medevac were AtlantiCare,MONOC 1 & PennStar
