From a standpoint of the weather it would have been better to welcome the summer season last week but tonight the Community Medical Center Foundation will hold its 10th Annual  Red, White & Brew Kick Off the Summer wine tasting event at the Toms River Country Club.

This is a really well-run fundraiser which benefits the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center at Community Medical Center and event co-chairs Jarrod Grasso and Nick Pagano along with a committee of 30 others have surely put together a great night for a great cause.  Not only will there be wine and beer tastings but local chefs and restaurants will be on hand with an array of food samplings sure to please everyone’s palate.

The event runs from 5:30-8:30 tonight at the Toms River Country Club on Washington Street and tickets are a bargain at $75 each and can be purchased at the door.  The previous nine “Red, White & Brew” fundraisers have raised some $750,000 for the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center, a high-level outpatient facility that offers advanced radiation, chemotherapy and infusion therapies. There is also a 33-bed inpatient unit so patients undergoing treatment can remain close to home and their families.

It was all started with a $1 million donation from the Citta Family in the name of Phil Citta, who was best known as the popular owner of the Office Restaurant & Lounge in Toms River lost his battle with pancreatic cancer more than ten years ago.

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier came into Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies on a high note, having been named the National League Player of the Week the day before.  He also knew that many from his hometown Toms River would make the trip to Philadelphia despite miserable weather conditions.

Frazier was the first player out on the field for warmups and was greeted by a busload of fans from his alma mater Toms River South who gathered near the Reds dugout behind a sign that read “Toms River Loves Todd Frazier.”  The very-likable 29-year old slugger signed autographs and posed for pictures and then went out and played possibly his worst game of the season.

Frazier went 0-5 and committed a pair of errors and I’m sure I was the reason why.  The first time I went to see him play in Philly he was sent back to the minors a couple of hours before game time. The second time was in New York against the Mets and they gave him a day off.  Then last night when the weather was awful and so was #21.  I won’t be there tonight; expect him to slug his 17th homer of the season.
