I’m not much of a track and field guy, not because I don’t admire the athletic talents of the competitors but because it’s not a great spectator sport.

With that said I attended Wednesday’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions for two reasons, it was nearby at Central Regional High School and I wanted to see Donovan Catholic’s Alyssa Wilson perform in person. I was not disappointed.

The championship meet drew thousands of participants and spectators to the newly refurbished track and athletic complex and despite a 45-minute delay due to some heavy storms that passed through the area and serious traffic congestion it was a banner day for many of the state’s top athletes.

Heading up that list was Wilson, the Griffins junior who is re-writing the record books in the shot put and discus and still has a year left in high school.  Having to run back and forth between the two events was not ideal but she managed to win both and set another record in the process.  Wilson’s shot put of 55’ 3 ½” not only set a meet and state record but it’s the second best in high school history.

She also took home the gold medal in the discus with a throw of 152’ 6” which while not nearly her best allowed her to win the event by 14 feet of the second place finisher.  Just another outstanding day for a young woman who we will be hearing a lot more about in years to come.

Credit Central Regional High School staff members who worked hard to pull off the difficult task of hosting such a big event, Berkeley Township police for helping with traffic control and the NJSIAA’s Bill Bruno in his first year of coordinating the meet.

The Southern Regional boys’ volleyball team will seek their fifth state championship tonight when they face Harrison in the NJSIAA Final at South Brunswick High School.  In what has been an incredible run coach Eric Maxwell’s Rams are in the championship match for the eight straight year and this year’s squad is led by his nephew and player-of-the-year candidate Liam Maxwell along with Brennan Davis and Collin Lockwood.
