Pressure cooker leads to Newark Airport terminal evacuation
NEWARK — A suspicious item spotted in Newark Liberty's Terminal C led to an evacuation on Wednesday night.
The discovery of the item led to the second level of the terminal that houses United Airlines, the airport's busiest airline, being closed around 7 p.m., according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.
The Essex County Sheriff's Bomb Unit determined the item, which turned out to be a pressure cooker, was harmless. The terminal was reopened around 8 p.m., according to the report.
The closure caused heavy traffic on the airport's roadways, as drivers were directed to use all levels to pick up passengers.
Terminal C has 59 gates and serves over 35 million travelers a day, according to Port Authority statistics as of 2014.
The Port Authority has not yet returned a message.
