JACKSON — Police say the accident on Friday night that required three medical helicopters to treat the injured was caused when one of the drivers tried to pass another car on the road.

Trooper Alejandro Goez, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said the driver of a Mercedes Benz traveling west on Route 537 near Six Flags Great Adventure tried to pass a Saturn on the right and hit it. Goez said as a result of the contact the Saturn went into the eastbound lanes and head on into another Saturn heading east driven by a 17-year-old boy from New Egypt.

The driver of the westbound Saturn was identified as Allyson Knipp, 22, from Brooklyn and the passengers in the Mercedes as Tiffany White, 24, from Cliffwood and Marc Exantus, 23, of Irvington. Goez did not disclose the identity of the Mercedes driver because of the ongoing investigation.

Route 537 was closed for four hours for the initial investigation.
