WOODBRIDGE — A weekend project on one of the most heavily traveled sections of the Garden State Parkway will likely cause delays all weekend.

Three right lanes are blocked near Exit 129 for the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 9 in Woodbridge until Monday morning at 5. This created a delay of over 5 miles on Saturday morning.

Similar lane closures were in place last fall as part of a longterm project further south in Sayreville at Exit 135 to replace the deck of the southbound outer (local) lanes on the bridge over Bordentown Avenue in Sayreville, located just north of the Cheesequake service area.

The work also closed the local lanes south of the Raritan tolls and the ramps from Route 440 onto the southbound Parkway.

No notification was provided to New Jersey 101.5 earlier in the week about the closures. There was also no mention of the closures under "severity alert" at the top of the New Jersey Department of Transportation traffic alert page.

"The most frustrating thing about being a traffic reporter is not knowing about a major project before it happens. It doesn’t allow me to do my job properly when we are not being informed. In the end it’s the driver that suffers," New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams said.

During last December's closure, Turnpike spokesman Thomas Feeney said, "the fact is, the capacity of the roadway is being reduced by half for the entire weekend. There are normally six lanes from the toll plaza to the Cheesequake Service Area. There will only be three this weekend. Delays are inevitable."

The lanes are expected to be re opened Monday morning at 5 a.m.
