All traffic on the Outerbridge will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge through October Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. On weekends, he closure begins at 11:59 p.m. on Friday and ends at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

After Labor Day the weekday closures begin at 9 p.m. The bridge will remain closed on Saturday morning until 8 a.m. Heavy rain may cause work to be postponed and work will be suspended on holiday weekends.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it is a $23 million project to replace the pavement on the bridge itself, around the toll plaza and the approach roadways. The span, built in the late 1920s. was last repaved in the early 2000s while a concrete slab was installed in 1977.  Both of these surfaces have reached the end of their useful lives according to the Port Authority.

The project is part of a $2.8 billion plan to replace the Goethals Bridge and replace the Bayonne Bridge roadway to allow for larger ships to pass through.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) urged the approval of the projects in April. They say the work will create upwards of 5,000 construction jobs, generate more than $600 million in wage and more than $2.5 billion in economic activity for the region.
