Lacey Township Special Officer Ken Martin is recovering from head and leg injuries after being hit by a car on Route 9 this morning.

Police say it was around 6:54 AM when Martin, 65, was directing traffic around a three-car crash that had taken place a short time earlier at the intersection of Lakeside Drive South.

Kirsten Cicardo, 18, of Forked River, clipped Martin as she turned onto northbound 9 from the sidestreet.

Martin was treated and released at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

No charges have been filed against Cicardo but the investigation is not yet closed. Members of the Ocean County Sheriff’s and Prosecutor’s offices are involved along with Lacey Township police.

Anyone with information that can help the investigation is urged to call Patrolman George Resetar, 609-693-6636, extension 2590.

The crash that prompted the need to bring Martin to the scene occurred in the same approximate spot about an hour earlier. Justin Gartley, 26, of Barnegat, was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with serious injuries.

Police say Gartley’s car veered out of the southbound side of Route 9 and into oncoming traffic, hitting cars driven by Robin Doyle, 40, and Gregory Doscher, 23, also of Barnegat. Doyle and Doscher sustained minor injuries.

That crash also remains under investigation.
