The fire that caused damage and destruction to 9 buildings in Ocean Grove last week, started in one of the apartments at 50 Main Avenue. According to Neptune Township Police, the Monmouth County Fire Marshal determined that the Friday, February 6, blaze was not suspicious and began on the second floor. The cause is listed as undetermined.

Four stores and seven apartments were completely destroyed. A house behind the structure also sustained significant damage and there was minor heat and water damage to several other structures. All the residents and store occupants are accounted for but one pet dog died in the fire. Police also say that there's no truth to rumors that the fire started in a kitchen.

The investigation is continuing with interviews of residents and witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Detective John Leibfried at 800-533-7443 or Neptune Police Sergeant Les Borgest at 732-988-8000 ext 413.

A relief fund has been set up at Central Jersey Bank in Ocean Grove to provide monetary donations for fire victims. Organizers say clothing and merchandise donations are no longer needed.
