NEWARK — A day after Phil Murphy faced Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno in the second debate before the November gubernatorial election, the Democrat is bringing former President Barack Obama to town.

Obama and Murphy, along with Murphy's lieutenant governor candidate Sheila Oliver, will hold a campaign event in Newark at 3:30 p.m. for what is being called a "Canvass Kickoff." The event will be at the Robert Treat Hotel in the city's downtown.

The New Jersey stop is one of two for Obama on Thursday as he is also expected to travel to Virginia later in the day to campaign for Ralph Northam, that state's Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive, served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany during the Obama administration.

Obama came to New Jersey last year when he spoke at the Rutgers University graduation ceremony in Piscataway. The ceremony marked the 250th anniversary of the school, and marked the first time a sitting president had addressed a Rutgers graduating class.
