Getting sick would not be all that bad if you could pick when you get hit with something that might keep you home for a couple of days. Unfortunately I am dealing with my first cold of the season at a time when I can’t miss a couple of hours, never mind days. Thought I was beating this cold until I woke up this morning feeling lousy and my wife told me I should stay home. When I told her that was impossible I got the usual “even the President takes a sick day here and there and he’s a lot more important that you.” I agree although frankly I might have more on my plate not then even the President.

OCEAN COUNTY ALUMN DOWN EAST

With the help of a pair of former Ocean County high school football standouts the University of Maine will play Appalachian State in the second round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs this Saturday in Boone, North Carolina. Black Bears quarterback Warren Smith played his high school football at Lacey and earned 2nd team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors recently.

A senior, Smith threw 17 touchdown passes this season and has had an interesting college career as he transferred to Maine after Iona College dropped football following his freshman year. It’s also been an interesting journey for senior defensive lineman Ryan Nani, who graduated from Toms River North in 2006 and has actually had a six-year career at Maine thanks to several injuries, surgeries and a medical red-shirt.

Nani has been able to play in all but one game this fall and his reward is a trip to the national tournament. Maine is 8-3 this season which includes a 6-point loss at Pittsburgh in week two.
