EDISON — Perhaps it's true: No good deed goes unpunished.

A 34-year-old Piscataway experienced that Friday after he rushed into action to help a woman who had fainted and fallen onto the train tracks at Edison Station.

While he was helping the 29-year-old commuter, another stranger in the crowd made off with the good Samaritan's bag, which contained his laptop and headphones valued at $700, about $200 in cash, and his work identification card, police said.

The crime outraged the township's top cop.

“This theft, perpetrated in the midst of such a selfless good deed, is nothing less than appalling and disgusting,” said Police Chief Thomas Bryan.

There was no word on whether the brazen theft was caught on the station's security cameras.

The woman, who was semi-conscious, was taken to Wood Johnson University Medical Center.

Anyone with information about the theft can call Edison police at 732-248-7400.
