CAMDEN — The man who police say beat a 4-year-old girl because she would not eat her dinner told the mom, who came home hours after the beating, that the girl was "fighting back," according to published reports.

Najuquan Ross, 20, faces first-degree murder charges that accuse him of severely beating the girl while her mom was at work. The mother, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, waited three days before taking the girl to the hospital where she eventually died.

Speaking at a detention hearing, Camden County Prosecutor Peter Gallagher called Ross a "violent, dangerous individual," the Courier-Post reported.

A judge ordered Ross to be held without bail.

The girl's mother, Lucy Gunter, was charged in July with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child for waiting to get the girl medical care before her death.
