NEWARK — A man suspected of robbing four banks in the late summer and early fall of 2016 has admitted to the crimes.

James Lockwood, 39, was arrested in September of that year and has been in custody since then, according to Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick. Lockwood admitted to robbing the Schuyler Bank in Kearny twice during that time as well as the M&T Bank in Lyndhurst and the Capital One Bank in Clifton.

As part of pleading guilty, Lockwood admitted to threatening to use force and demanded money while robbing the various bank branches, Fitzpatrick said. If convicted, Lockwood faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for each of the bank robbery charges.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 2.
