New Jerseyans Think More About Saving Heat Money [AUDIO]

You may not have been thinking about your heating bill when the temperatures were milder, but this cold spell in Jersey right now should be getting your attention. Mike Kinney of New Jersey Natural Gas says cash-strapped homeowners want to maximize their heat benefit while minimizing their heat bill He says there are a lot of things people can do to make sure ther homes are warm and to keep the cold out.

He advises sealing off unused rooms and not heating them if you can, and open drapes and blinds during daytime to let the sun in. Also make sure your home is well-insulated, and that includes tight seals around windows and doors. Weatherstripping and caulking, or even a simple device such as a so-called, “draft-dodger” at the bottom of a drafty door can stop cold air. If you have rooms or areas in the home that you are not using, seal them off and do not heat them if you can. Kinney says a ceiling fan can also be used to keep warm air lower in a room or living space.

Kinney says as the weather begins to turn colder, there are things that you can do to make your home a little more comfortable without adding much additional expense to your heating bills.

And that also includes warmer clothing and more blankets at night when you sleep.
