A Barnegat woman and her four year old son are airlifted to a trauma center following a four-car chain reaction collision in Barnegat.

Police say the incident occurred Monday afternoon at around 2:40 at the intersection of West Bay Avenue and Barnegat Boulevard.

According to police reports, the operator of a Honda Accord, identified as 77-year-old Robert Nowicki of Toms River, slammed into the back of the woman's Ford Taurus while it was stopped at a traffic light, which forced it into the back of a box truck car, that crashed into the rear of an SUV.

The woman, identified as 26-year-old Sheena Longland and her son Aiden, who was in a car-seat, had to be extracted from the vehicle. She suffered a broken and arm and possible internal injuries and her son, multiple leg fractures. Front seat passenger Marie Germer was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center by Quality Medical ambulance with facial lacerations and possible internal injuries.

Police say Nowicki was transported by Quality Medical ambulance to Southern Ocean Medical Center with chest pain. The remaining subjects were either uninjured or had minor injuries.

Preliminary indications are that Nowicki suffered a medical episode while driving which led to the accident.

Multiple lanes were closed on West Bay Avenue in the area of the accident for approximately two hours while the investigation was conducted.
