In an effort to safeguard the community from mosquitoes carrying the virus, the Monmouth County mosquito control division will be spraying residential streets south of Belmar Boulevard Routes 35 and 71 around 9:30 Tuesday night and going until midnight.

Residents living in the areas of Wall Township and Spring Lake Heights are asked to remain indoors with any pets they have.

“The goal of the ground spray program is to reduce the public health risk from WNV (West Nile Virus) in the area,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Serena DiMaso, in a press release.

While spraying of the chemicals won't be administered should winds exceed 10 mph or in the event of poor weather conditions, DiMaso adds it's crucial to remember a number of safety tips regardless of the spraying including wearing insect repellent outside.

Other safety tips include wearing longer clothes if possible, avoid extended outdoor activities around dusk and dawn, and above all to spray yourself with repellent.

“It is important to learn the ways to reduce your risk of being bitten by a mosquito,” said DiMaso in a press statement. “There are many insect-borne diseases and taking steps to reduce your risk of getting bitten could save your life."
