Mike Rice fallout: Rutgers pays ex-basketball player $300,000 over abuse lawsuit

Rutgers University has reached a settlement with a former men's basketball player who claims abusive treatment by former coach Mike Rice caused him to "shut down."

Derrick Randall, who in his 2013 lawsuit said he was diagnosed with learning disabilities and related issues, says ge'd been  "chronically and heinously targeted and abused, both physically and psychologically" by Rice in rants during practice caught on video and aired by ESPN in 2013.

The website NJ Civil Settlements reported Wednesday night Randall and the school in April agreed to a $300,000 settlement, in which, as is typical for such settlements, Rutgers admits no wrongdoing. The school will also cover $6,800 Randall's legal team paid for expert witnesses. Both sides also agreed to not discuss the settlement publicly.

Former Athletic Director Timothy Pernetti, assistant basketball coach James Martelli, Rutgers CFO for Intercollegiate Athletics Janine Purcaro, Rutgers Board of Governors member Mark P. Hershhorn and Rutgers University President Robert L. Barchi were all named in the suit.

The airing of the video by ESPN on its program "Outside The Lines" program — which showed numerous clips of Rice at practice firing basketballs at players, hitting them in the back, legs, feet and shoulders — triggered a firestorm of controversy over Rutgers athletics. Rice was also shown pushing players in the chest, and grabbing them by their jerseys and yanking them around the court. Rice could be heard screaming obscenities and anti-gay slurs at players.

Rice was fined and suspended by then-Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti and ordered to attend anger management classes, but was eventually fired. Pernetti was forced to resign over his handling of the situation.
