For the sake of those of you with no interest in the fact the Mets are two wins away from the World Series I will keep this brief.

I had a chance to go to Saturday night’s NLCS opener against the Cubs and turned it down and you might question how big a fan I am because I did not go even though my son had tickets. My defense is two-fold. First I worked the Monmouth University football game Saturday where I’m the public address announcer for the Hawks home games. This would have meant me likely driving to Secaucus after the game and taking a train to Penn Station and then another to CitiField.

The second part is I would have not only froze as it was bitterly cold but then close to midnight began the trek home via two trains and then the drive back from Secaucus. Instead I was very comfortable in front of the TV watching Matt Harvey and screaming for Daniel Murphy and I plan to keep it that way.

I have said before that one of the best things about high school sports is that in good times it can help bring a school and community together and I witnessed that first hand on Friday night in Red Bank. In a frenzied atmosphere and in front of students, alumni, faculty and fans Red Bank Regional exorcized some ghosts by beating Red Bank Catholic for the first time since 2004 and taking ownership of the local bragging rights, at least for one year.

It was only last season that these same Bucs had lost to the Caseys 53-0 and in the previous eight meetings had been outscored by a humiliating 386-33. But as students stormed the field and adults cried with joy in the stands this night belonged to RBR and not RBC as the public school improved to 6-0 and clinched no worse than a tie for their first divisional title in 38 years.

We took a ride to Long Beach Island Sunday and stopped for lunch at The Chicken or the Egg in Beach Haven which is a landmark LBI restaurant since 1991 and best known as “Chegg”. It was also my first time there because I always thought the name of the place was The Chicken AND The Egg and it was only a breakfast place. Boy was I wrong and the problem with the menu was there were too many choices.

However there was no way I was passing on the wings which come with a choice of 16 sauces from teriyaki to ludicrous (hot). They were so big I thought they were injected with steroids and the taste matched the size. I know people wait hours in the summer to get a seat but you can jump in right now as long as you there by November 1st when they close for the season.
