The snow that began falling earlier than expected across south Jersey prompting higher amounts of snow to fall than forecast continues its transition to sleet and rain.

LATEST:

8:00 p.m. - Newark and LaGuardia continue to have flight delays of nearly 90 minutes according to FlightAware.com.

7:56 p.m. - Some school districts are delaying or canceling classes for Monday. Check the full list.

7:55 p.m. - National Weather Service totals from today's shows Medfor (9.4 inches), Southampton (9.3), Beachwood, Vincentown and Deptford (9.0), Lindenwold (8.5), Laurel Springs and Mantua (8.3), Cherry Hill, Toms River and Berkeley(8.0) were among the hightest amounts officially recorded. 5:00 p.m. The National Weather Service has upped the expected totals in some parts of Camden and Gloucester counties as high as 12 inches.

The snow is beginning to transition to sleet and freezing rain in some areas from north to south.

2:55 p.m. - Snow totals are now forecast for 5-10 inches in areas under the Winter Weather Warning in Ocean, Burlington, Salem, Gloucester and Camden counties under midnight. The changeover to sleet and freezing rain will begin this evening with rain by midnight.

2:30 p.m. - Most roads continue to be untreated. Among the bigger problems are the closure in Lakehurst of Route 70 between Route 547 and the Circle with Route 37 due to poor condition

1:30 p.m. - NJ Transit will cross honor across their system on trains, buses and lights rain starting at 6 p.m. and continuing through Monday.

The snow began falling earlier than expected in the late morning at the rate of an inch an hour for several hours.

According to the Facebook page Phillywx.com, a number of factors contributed to the surprise snow including more cold air in the lower atmosphere and the band of snow becoming almost like a front because the warm air from the south can't lift north past a boundary in the atmosphere. It instead becomes the focal point for heavier precipitation. The page says that if it were summer we'd be getting very heavy thunderstorms.

NBC 40 meteorologist Dan Skeldon is reporting over 3 inches of snow in Blackwood in Camden County on his Facebook page in just over an hour.

As the snow moved in a number of accidents were reported to New Jersey Fast Traffic as untreated roads quickly become snow covered. The New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 295 have several accidents near the Delaware Memorial Bridge resulting in partial closures.

Toms River Police Chief Tom Mastronardy reports at least 20 accidents at 1 p.m. Manchester Police report several minor accidents on Route 70. There are also accidents on the Garden State Parkway in Toms River with overall slower traffic. WOBM's Justin Louis reports the Garden State Parkway is a "parking lot" in Ocean County in the Brick area.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues in Monmouth, Middlesex, Somerset and Mercer counties along with Hunterdon, Warren, Sussex, Morris and Passaic counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory Winter Weather Advisory as the snow could be heavy for a time this afternoon in these areas.

Delays of 1 hour, 45  min are reported at Philadelphia while Newark and Kennedy have 60 minute delays according to the website FlightAware.com

The snow is expected to turn to freezing rain, sleet and then rain overnight from south to north as temperatures rise into the 40s.

North Jersey is where the frozen precipitation will change last creating slick roads and have an affect on roads and especially secondary roads for the Monday morning commute. "The transition could make driving difficult, especially on bridges and overpasses," Jim Bunker of the National Weather Service's Mt. Holly office told the Star Ledger.


Interior Pennsylvania, New York State and New England have the best chance for more are all also preparing for a change from snow to a wintry mix that will create hazardous driving conditions, potential power outages and flight delays.
