March Madness is most often used in regards to college basketball but it would be just as appropriate to describe the weather we are experiencing this month and it looks like we are headed for another terrific week. I keep saying we are going to pay for this at some point and I just hope it’s not this summer.

Cincinnati Reds prospect Todd Frazier hit his team-leading 4th home run of the spring Sunday and continues to impress but the 26-year old former Toms River South standout could start the season at Triple-A Louisville. Frazier appears to be battling for an infield utility spot on the Reds roster and even if he starts the season in the minors could be a very quick call-up.

It was quite a week for a pair of Penn State student-athletes who call Ocean County home. In the final match of his collegiate wrestling career Barnegat’s Frank Molinaro won the 149 pound national title in St. Louis Saturday night to complete an undefeated season. A three-time state champion at Southern Regional, Molinaro battled a knee-injury to help lead the Nittany Lions to their second straight NCAA Championship. He could be returning to New Jersey and working on Scott Goodale’s staff at Rutgers next season.

While Molinaro’s career has come to an end Tatum Coffey’s is just starting and what a start it’s been for the freshman lacrosse player out of Toms River North. Coffey scored 5 goals in a win over Hofstra last Wednesday but bettered that yesterday when she led 11th ranked Penn State to a 12-11 overtime win at 8th ranked Vanderbilt. Coffey netted six goals against the Commodores, including the game-winner in overtime and the 18-year old leads the team with 23 goals in just nine games. Coffey earned 12 varsity letters while a Mariner including three as a member of the Ice Hockey team…that’s boy’s ice hockey.

The Central Regional Alumni Association will hold its 3rd Annual All-Alumni Night this Friday at the Sawmill Café on the boardwalk in Seaside Park starting at 6pm. The event is open to all graduates of Central and tickets are $25 per person but will not be sold at the door. For information you can email cenreg76@aol.com.
