Reward Increased for Information on Short Hills Carjackers

As Essex County law enforcement continue their manhunt for the two carjackers who shot Dustin Friedland at the Mall at Short Hills on Sunday night his wife's uncle says he wants them "to die" as the reward money leading to their arrest increases.

Dr. Mark Schare, the uncle of Friedland's wife Jamie who lives in Michigan, released a statement to 7 ABC talking about the pain the Friedland's death has caused his family. "I want the punks responsible to pay. I want them to die. I want them to get what they gave."

He recounted to the New York Post how the couple had purchased a new home in Hoboken. “They were starting a life together,” Schare told the Post. “They bought a house. They were making plans for a family and a future.”

The Bergen Record reports that mall owners The Taubman Company has added $20,000 to the $10,000 already being offered by the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers program for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in this case. Essex County law enforcement continue their manhunt for the two carjackers who shot Dustin Friedland in a parking deck at the Mall at Short Hills on Sunday night. They had no updates to offer about the case on Tuesday.

Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray, in a Sunday night press conference at the mall, said: "Preliminary information is we're looking for two African-American males who left the scene in that vehicle."

According to the New York Daily News, police are checking surveillance video from the mall to identify two individuals seen circling the parking lot in a green SUV. One eyewitness on Sunday night told the Star-Ledger he saw a green Subaru speed out of the parking lot at what looked to be "over 100 MPH."

Friedland put up a fight to protect his wife according to the Daily News, refusing to hand over the keys as his wife sat inside their 2012 silver Range Rover. Four shots were fired according to the newspaper, including the fatal one to the head. “Then one of them comes to her door and says, ‘Get out of the car. She got a look at him," a law enforcement source revealed.

The Range Rover was found in Newark on Monday morning on Renner Avenue which is not far from Interstate 78 which leads directly to Short Hills. The SUV was hidden behind an abandoned home,one of many in the South Ward neighborhood according to the Star Ledger, which reports a nearby house had a surveillance video on the outside.

"I'm just worn out. This day was one of the most difficult days of my life. So totally senseless. So totally devastating. So very sad. I'm not mad, I'm numb. Maybe in a few days, weeks or months, I'll get mad. What I do I want? I want the punks responsible to pay. I want them to die. I want them to get what they gave. I don't want to hear about gun laws, that dilutes this atrocity. I don't want to hear about how difficult they had it growing up, that dilutes the selfishness of their crime. And I don't want to hear how we need to show them compassion, that dilutes the fact that they committed MURDER. Murder that PERMANENTLY ended the life of my nephew, a sweet, soft, loving, giving, smart and talented Individual. Murder that has devastated my niece, made her a widow, and murder that has PERMANENTLY scarred my family."
