Man Freed From Manalapan Water Pipe

A man trapped in a water pipe in Manalapan has been freed.

Manalapan Mayor Jordan Maskowitz tells the Asbury Park Press the man was taken via helicopter to a trauma center shortly before noon. He would not identify the man except to say he is "known to police."

Pipe has to be dismantled in order to free the man according to the Asbury Park Press.

United Water spokesman Rich Henning says the man "broke over a fence with barbed wire on top" to enter the property overnight. Workers heard cries for help as they arrived for work around 7 a.m. He says their first priority was to free the man, who was wearing only a jacket and shorts according to NBC 4 New York. He left his home around 2:30 a.m.

Henning says “It is a facility that pumps water, pumps it out of the ground. This is certainly the first time we have ever seen anything like this.” He says it treats and pumps water for the township of Manalapan. Henning says the outflow pipe is used for cleaning a storage facility and is no more than 24 inches wide.

Manalapan Townsip on their website posted there was no effect on the water supply.

Over a dozen members of rescue crews are on site according to live video of the scene shown by News 12 New Jersey including New Jersey Task Force 1 which specializes in rescuing people trapped in buildings and spaces.
