A Long Branch man indicted Monday for a July murder of a city man may spend up to life in prison if convicted at a January 8 arraignment.

Jeffrey Williams, 29, stands accused of shooting Hector C. Mejia to death around 11:41 pm  July 16 outside the victim's home on Liberty Street.

Mejia was pronounced dead at 11:56 pm after at the scene after being found on the ground bleeding by responding officers to a reported shooting.

The Monmouth County Prosecutors Office was joined by Long Branch Police, Lakewood Police and Keansburg Police in finding the shooter and bringing him to justice.

Williams who was arrested on July 21, has been charged in the five county indictment with first degree Murder, first degree Felony Murder, first degree Robbery, second degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose and second degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

An aggravating factor discovered by the grand jury may mean life in prison without parole for Williams.

If he is convicted or murder or felony murder, Williams may spend three decades behind bars in a state prison, without parole along with a maximum sentence of life in jail subject to the provisions of the "No Early Release Act" (NERA) which requires him to serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for release on parole.

He would also be under parole supervision for five years following his release from state prison.

If convicted of Robbery, he faces up to 20 years in state prison.

If convicted of second degree weapons offenses, it could be a sentence of up to ten years in state prison on each count.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
