A little of this and a little of that the day before spring is supposed to begin although it looks like this time around the ground hog was very wrong.

The Central Regional Alumni Association will hold its 4th Annual All-Alumni Night on Friday at the Sawmill Café in Seaside Park from 6-11:30pm.  The event is open to all graduates of the high school and tickets are just $26 which includes all you can eat pizza, pasta, wings and salad.  There are still some tickets left which can be purchased at Roots Hair Salon on Route 9 in Bayville or at the main office at the high school.  A limited number will be available at the door Friday.

As a member of the Class of '73 I attended the last two alumni nights and they were truly a lot of fun.  Unfortunately I can’t make it Friday but I’m sure my fellow Golden Eagles will toast my absence.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament gets underway tonight for those who count these stupid play-in games that were created when the field went from 64 to 68 teams.  I’ll hold off until Thursday for those who need last-minute help with their office pools, not that I’m any help.  I do like the overall top seed Louisville to win it all but in fairness I picked them back in December as part of this pool I’ve entered for years.  Without knowing what the brackets would be at that time my final four was Louisville, Duke, Indiana and Kansas and three of those teams earned #1 seeds which is not bad.

While his team won’t be in the “big dance” there is post-season tournament play for Joe Scott and his University of Denver Pioneers.  Scott is a Pelican Island native who is among the greatest all-around athletes in Toms River East High School history.  The former head coach at Air Force and his alma mater Princeton is now in his 6th season at Denver and he led the team to a 21-8 regular season before they were upset in the opening round of the WAC Tournament.

That was good enough to land the Pioneers in the NIT where they open play tonight at Ohio University.  It would be great if somehow Scott and his team could make it to the final four at Madison Square Garden but regardless the future is bright as Denver will lose only one senior from its roster of 13 players.

I’m not the biggest NBA fan but you have to be impressed by Miami’s 23-game winning streak…the second longest in league history.  Lebron James is playing at a level of dominance not seen since you know who.
