Javier Alexander Rivas, 19, whose last known address is in Lakewood, was a passenger in the car that, according to police, raced through a school zone early Tuesday afternoon.

Marco Hernandez, 20, was behind the wheel of the 2003 Mitsubishi that police clocked at more than 50 miles per hour in the 30 mile-per-hour zone on North Hope Chapel Road at about 1:28 PM.

An officer who pursued the car followed Hernandez onto New Central Avenue and managed to bring the car to a halt on Brewers Bridge Road.

Catching the odor of burning marijuana from inside the compartment, the officer initiated a search and found some weed, plus a large folding knife with a brass-knuckle handle under the driver's seat.

Police said that Rivas offered two different names, increasing the difficulty of positive identification and necessitating fingerprinting through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

The identifcation produced the Tennessee warrant, with full extradition. A charge of hindering apprehension was added, and Rivaas was placed in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, with bail for the hindering charge set at $25,000.

Hernandez was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, unlawful possession of a weapon, speeding, obstructed view, driving with a suspended license, unlicensed driver, and failure to install in ignition interlock device. He was released on a summons to await a court appearance.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
