LAKEWOOD - Nine days of intensified traffic patrols in Lakewood resulted in 256 summonses to drivers in 278 vehicles, and only one speeding ticket, according to information from the office of Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato.

The initiative, part of an ongoing series aimed at reducing the number of traffic fatalities in the county, entailed local, county and state law enforcement, in marked and unmarked vehicles, from December 7 to December 16.

Fourteen road deaths in Ocean County during 2017 have occurred in the township.

Aside from the speeding ticket, there were 89 other moving violations, and 53 non-moving violations written up. Twenty-two citations were issued for seat belt violations. Nine involved improper child restraints. Faulty equipment accounted for 44.

The crackdown also yielded 32 traffic signal violations, two arrests for driving under the influence, two for traveling with open containers of alcohol, two instances of drugs and/or controlled dangerous substances, and two warrant arrests.

Officers on patrol recorded 210 overtime hours.
