Lakewood man dies crossing Route 88 in Brick Sunday night

A Lakewood man dies after being hit by a car on Route 88 in Brick Township Sunday night.

The Asbury Park Press reports 41-year old Michael Cappello suffered head and internal injuries after being hit by 26-year old Frank Moro of Brick who couldn't avoid hitting the victim in the travel lane near Old Squan Road around 8 pm on Christmas Eve.

Police say Moro "stopped his vehicle and pulled to the side of the road," according to the APP report.

It's not known what damage Moro's 2003 Ford Escape was in following the crash or why Cappello was in the road at that time.

The APP also reports that Moro wasn't using a cell phone and police say "it appears that speed was not a factor in the crash."

Cappello died from his injuries in hospitalization.
