For the third year in-a-row I had the pleasure to serve as Master of Ceremonies as Shore Board #194 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials gathered to honor their own and others.

Maureen McCann, who worked last week’s TOC Girls Final, received the Joe Callano Award for her contributions to officiating and Walt Reiser, who spent 30 years at Rumson-Fair Haven as a teacher, athletic trainer and Athletic Director received the Jim Sullivan Award for all he’s done for basketball at the shore.

Four high school programs were saluted for exhibiting high levels of sportsmanship this past season.  Receiving Gerry White Sportsmanship Award banners were the Barnegat boys and Central Regional girls in Ocean County along with the Raritan boys and Colts Neck girls in Monmouth County.

Special thanks to Mike Fogarty and George Fixter who served as co-chairman of the banquet committee.  Believe it or not the officials are a fun group and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening before being given two technical fouls and asked to leave.

The long basketball season will officially end tonight at Wall High School where the Shore Basketball Coaches Association Senior All Star games will be played.  The girls game is first at 6pm and will feature players like Dana Carbone of Monsignor Donovan and Sarah Kurtz of St. Rose while heading up the top boys players will be Southern’s Mike Gesicki, Notre Dame-bound Matt Farrell of Point Beach and Jackson’s Eric Carter.

The Shore Sports Network’s All Shore and All Division teams have been announced and can be found at shoresportsnetwork.com

The Brick PBA will host their annual “Helping Hands” benefit basketball game tonight at Brick Township High School when they face members of the Green Dragons football team.  This year the cops and football players are teaming up to help the family of 12-year old Wyatt Kubar, who is battling Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.  As if the cancer is not enough Wyatt’s mother Holly also has two other children and as a single mother is dealing with quite a bit.

Tickets for the 7:30 game can be purchased at the door are just $3 for adults and $2 for students.  The Brick PBA does a tremendous job each year in extending their help to those in the community in need.  For more information on how you can help call (732) 262-1122.
